“Exceptionally simple PDE”

In back-to-back articles in 1893, Cartan and Engel gave the first realisations of G2, the smallest of the exceptional complex simple Lie groups, as the symmetries of a geometric structure. I will show how to generalize this story in a remarkably uniform manner to obtain analogous explicit geometric realisations for any complex simple Lie group (...except for SL2).
